OUR ADIRONDACK WILDERNESS
Historic Pathway to the Settlement of the Town of Webb
This new exhibit premieres on November 23rd- in conjunction with the Town's Christmas on Main Street Celebration. The exhibit includes a display of maps from two-centuries ago when the "Adirondacks" was known only as the Northern Wilderness or the land of the Iroquosia -- to the early 20th maps that identify the present-day hamlets, boundaries, travel routes, and geological place names in the Town of Webb. Biographical stories & the tools of their trade will introduce visitors to the work of an intrepid group of surveyors and mapmakers whose boots traversed every corner of our Township through densely forested terrain, dismal swamps, and unexplored peaks and waterways. The exhibit will help to identify the evolution of many place names in the Town of Webb - including the phantom locals like Arnolds and Mount St. Louis that were once destinations listed in the 19th Century travelers' guidebooks to the Adirondacks.
TOWHA is pleased to announce that Kristy Rubyor has been appointed the Assistant to the Director - the position formerly held by Director Kate Lewis. Kristy and her family live in Woodgate, NY and she has many family ties to the Town of Webb. Visitors will enjoy meeting Kristy who has an wealth of knowledge about local history. With her skilled help, TOWHA will continue to update our collections to electronic format to make records more assessable to the public.
