In 1999, the Town of Webb School bought the Hemmer Cottage and used it for their
building contractor while expanding the school. In the winter of 2001, Cottage
Kent was put out for bid, or would be torn down of July 1st of that year. A
small group of local folks began to meet to discuss ways to save the building.
On the day the school board opened the bids, the Hemmer Cottage Team submitted
the only offer - $751, with the agreement to remove the building and restore the
lot. An extension was granted to the team until June 1st, 2002 to raise money
and support. It came from countless sources: Senator Ray Meier pledged $25,000,
The Town of Webb Historical Association accepted the Hemmer Team as an ad-hoc
committee, Linda & Sarah Cohen donated a beautiful waterfront lot, Twin Oaks
gift shop had miniatures made to sell to raise money.
Our biggest fundraiser to date was a waterfront chicken barbecue, catered by Nick Bankert, prop. of the McCauley Mt. food service, and the Fulton Chain Gang's donated services to play for the event. More than 300 dinners were served netting over $1,800 to the preservation fund! |
