The Hemmer Cottage Restoration Project began in the spring of 2001. Determined to save an architecturally unique Adirondack building, a small group of concerned citizens began the daunting task of raising money to save the structure and find a permanent site for its relocation. Today, the cottage is owned by the Town of Webb Historical Association. Follow the links below to the remarkable story of how a community came together save the cottage from destruction.

Highlights from 2007-2008

2008 Update

Hemmer Cottage experienced a furnace malfunction on January 8, 2008 (YES - mid-winter). Fortunately the evening temperatures were relatively mild that week while parts were obtained for the repair work. The entire contents of the cottage including three Bernard Hemmer oil paintings, interior walls, floors, ceilings, and artifacts were covered with a fine layer of soot. Insurance covered most of the professional cleaning. The CAP-21 rooms and conference room were also professionally cleaned with a minimal disruption to their office work.

2007 News

Wedding of Patricia Dolan and Rolf Brown at Hemmer Cottage in May 2007
Patricia's a descendent of Mary & Bernard Hemmer

Congratulations Patricia & Rolf!

Congratulations to Patricia & Rolf who are on the steps of the cottage. Patricia remembers many happy times playing cards with her grandmother Mary Hemmer in the living room. Registration & the awards ceremony for the Old Forge Paddle Classic June 30th was held at the Hemmer Cottage again. Racers chose between a 6-mile or 12-mile course that began and ended at the Old Forge waterfront. The Hollywood Hills 2007 auto-walking tours in August, led by Town Historian Peg Masters, began at the cottage on Friday mornings. Many guests enjoyed a tour and history of the cottage as well.

A new benefit for the Historical Assoc. took place August 16, 2007 called "A Season to Remember," chaired by Jim "Doc" and Judy Foley. Guests gathered first at Hemmer Cottage, greeted by men in formal attire. Under a large tent, attendees enjoyed a variety of beverages, appetizers, and other specialty foods donated by area restaurants. Music during the evening was provided by Alan Nathan. Guests were then led by a bagpiper to the Strand Theater to enjoy champagne and a slideshow of community submitted still photos of family, friends, nature scenes, special occasions, and memorable events on the "big screen." The Foley's have generously agreed to chair this fundraiser again in 2008 on AUGUST 14th - and have expanded the program to SEASONS TO REMEMBER. Contact the Historical for more information on tickets or becoming a "star" in this BIG SCREEN Showing.

Our thanks to groundskeeper John DeVoldre who gave the lawn a boost in June 2007 with a hydro-seeding.

January - March, 2005

In the late autumn of 2004, the Central Adirondack Partnership for the 21st Century (CAP-21) worked out a rental agreement with the Historical Association to move their offices to the upper floors of the Hemmer Cottage.  CAP-21, a not-for-profit organization located in Old Forge, is dedicated to regional planning and partnership development among local governments, businesses, social and other not-for-profit organizations from Forestport to Raquette Lake.

The win-win agreement now provides a modest source of funds to offset the operational utility expenses for the cottage. It also enhances CAP-21's mission to encourage cooperation among individuals and groups working towards sustainable economical growth while respecting the environment and maintaining the quality of life enjoyed by residents and visitors in the region.  The first floor of the cottage and the property will  remain available to the Historical Association community events and historic exhibits.

Many of the improvements in the summer of 2003 where accomplished thanks to an Adirondack North Country Community Enhancement Project (ANCCEP) Grant awarded to the Town of Webb Historical Association. The $25,000 grant was used to make landscape and parking improvements at Hemmer Cottage, and to fund new sidewalks at the Goodsell Memorial Museum on Main Street. The NYS Division of Housing and Community Renewal (DHCR) administers the grant funds. Link to Governor Pataki's announcement of ANCCEP awards in October 2002. Support for the Hemmer Project is still needed.

Highlights from 2001

In the winter of 2001, the Hemmer Cottage was put up for sale by the Town of Webb School District - or slated to be demolished if a buyer was not found.

Hemmer Cottage in the Winter of 2001 on the school property

A group of local citizens organized, circulated a petition expressing an interest in saving the building, and were overwhelmed at the support of the community and visitors to save this unique structure. Funds were collected to present a bid to the school board. The winning bid - $751 by the ad-hoc committee now called the Hemmer Team. Thanks to an agreement with the School Board, the Team was given an extension of the May 2001 deadline for removal of the cottage. Follow the link below to see more photos and for the history of the cottage - originally one of a dozen unique cottages built in the 1920s - 1930s by World War I veteran Bernard Hemmer.
