It Takes A Hamlet - Moving Day for Hemmer Cottage

Photos begin at the old site, including a ceremonial signing of the land over to the Town of Webb Historical Association by Linda & Sarah Cohen. Within 15 minutes after the Cottage was moved, a thunderstorm closed in upon us - The move was a complete success - everyone headed to Walt's Diner for a celebration breakfast.

Dark clouds threatened early in the morning of May 31, 2002. Steve Dziuba & Son pulled the Cottage out onto Park Ave, pivoted for the turn, and paused briefly. Blue skies appeared. Folks started to gather, and at 9:00 am, a brief ceremony was held thanking the many participants who worked with the Hemmer Cottage Team to mark this historic day in the hamlet of Old Forge.

Valerie Gaudin, former tenant of Hemmer Cottage, played the piano while the Town of Webb School Chorus sang "God Bless America" followed by the school's Alma Mater, written by Mary Hemmer, wife of the builder. It was quite an emotional moment - hardly a dry-eye in the crowd!

The entire procession took less than thirty-five minutes to get to the waterfront lot - the new location for Hemmer Cottage. Among the delightful guests of honor for the move were Linda & Sarah Cohen, donors of the land, and Helen Hemmer & family, widow of William Hemmer, son of Bernard and Mary. Also with us was Mary Nelson Farmer, granddaughter of Bernard and Mary, (Mary was born in the cottage), and Mrs. Richard (Maureen) Williams who owned the cottage from the early 1980's-1999.
