St. Peter's by the Lake - Congratulations on your 2005 -
100th Anniversary
St. Peter's was built on Fourth Lake in 1905 by Chris Goodsell, brother George
Goodsell who built the Historical Assoc. home on Main St. in Old Forge.
The phrase "God's Country" is credited to Father John Fitzgerald, the Catholic Priest who served at St. Bartholomew's Church in Old Forge from 1896 until his death in 1925. His parish extended from White Lake in Oneida County to Blue Mountain northward in Hamilton County - including all the backcountry logging camps in the forest. The exhibit on the historic churches of the region was featured at the Historical Association in the summer of 2002. A souvenir collector's 2003 CALENDAR including photos and the history of over a dozen churches in the region is still available at the Historical.
